The Truth About Genital Herpes

Always, controversies and scandals surround sexually transmitted diseases and emotional trauma results. It is no different when it comes to genital herpes. It may not be as serious or life-threatening as AIDS or the HIV virus but it is equally life-changing because the virus responsible for genital herpes will NEVER leave you. There is no known cure for genital herpes and this fact alone can reduce people into tears of anguish and regret. But there are steps you may take to reduce the off-putting effects of genital herpes.

What’s the cause of genital herpes?

Theories abound regarding the causes or origins of genital herpes but everything always come down to two specific viruses: herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2. AIDS patients are often infected by HSV and so experience chronic symptoms of genital herpes.

How is the virus responsible for genital herpes transmitted?

As genital herpes is a viral disease (but not airborne), this means it can be transmitted through skin to skin contact – including acts of intimacy – and when parts affected by genital herpes have contact with parts of another person that results into exchange of bodily fluids.

What are the symptoms of genital herpes?

When you have contact with someone suffering from genital herpes – it doesn’t matter if it’s HSV 1 or 2 – the first signs or symptoms of genital herpes is systemic or affects the whole body. Common genital herpes symptoms include fever, muscle aches and pain as well as lack or absence of appetite.

Something to look forward to: according to statistics, half of those suffering from genital herpes (caused by HSV 2 strain) experience asymptomatic infections – this means being infected but not experiencing any symptoms.
Regarding specific genital herpes symptoms, the first changes you’ll notice is increased skin sensitivity and feelings of burning, itching or pain at the areas that will soon show effects of genital herpes.

The next stage of genital herpes symptoms is when blisters would start appearing. These are quite painful to have when irritated but usually heal from one to two weeks. Enlargement and increased tenderness of lymph nodes close to the groin is also possible. Some women will experience painful urination and vaginal discharges. Men can experience the first symptom when the blisters are next or close to the opening of the urethra.

Is there any relief or treatment for genital herpes?

Warm baths help soothe the pain away. Be careful to cleanse affected areas of genital herpes gently and with soap and water only. Oral and intravenous medicines are available in the market but may come with side effects. Be warned that these only reduces the symptoms; it does not serve as a cure.
