Coming Into Terms With Genital Herpes

“Hello, I’m Tom. I’m an alcoholic.”

Immortal words murmured by thousands of people who are trying to come into terms with their abuse of alcohol. In some ways, people with genital herpes must undergo a similar process if they want to get over their condition.
Alcoholics are ashamed of their personal lack of control and which resulted into liquor abuse.

On the other bottle – err, hand -, people with genital herpes feel that they came to their condition through their own fault, perhaps due to sexual promiscuity or carelessness. What they, like all alcoholics, have to understand that alcoholism and genital herpes do not select its victims. It can happen to anyone.

While alcoholism may be permanently cured in a way, there is no such source of comfort to be found for people suffering from genital herpes. The virus is immortal-like because scientists have yet to discover a cure for it. But don’t feel so down yet. In spite of that, you can still live a relatively normal life even with genital herpes. Naturally, there would be constraints where previously there were none but at least, it’s not as bad as someone with leprosy for example.

The most important thing to combat when it comes to genital herpes is the pain. While fifty percent or roughly half of those infected with genital herpes are lucky to be infected asymptomatically, the other half has to bear agonizing symptoms. Symptoms may start as something entirely mild such as migraines, muscle pain and fever.

You may also feel throbbing or heightened sensitivity near the genital areas. These areas will be where blisters or wounds form. These lesions are painful to touch, hence the need for medicine that could take away the pain and make the wounds heal more quickly than usual. You may also have to undergo daily suppressive therapy to further reduce the chances of recurring symptoms.

The second thing that you have to learn to adjust to is the changes in your life that’s caused by genital herpes. Accept the fact that there will always be people who would treat you with disdain or maybe even disgust when they learn that you have genital herpes. Ignore these people because they’re just plain ignorant and insensitive.

Secondly, as nice as a person may be, there are some who have issues about sexually transmitted diseases and would not want to have a relationship with someone infected by something like genital herpes. Again, deal with that and just chalk it up to human imperfection.
Always remember that you of all people never wanted to contract genital herpes and as long as you don’t intentionally spread the virus to others, you have nothing to hide or be ashamed of.
