A Genital Herpes Self-Help Checklist

We greatly empathize with what you’re going through. We know how hard it is to be suffering from genital herpes and though no amount of words will make a difference on your condition, we at least tried to think of several ways to reduce the emotion and physical pain that diseases such as genital herpes force you to undergo.

IT’S NOT AN INDICATION THAT YOU’RE SINFUL.

Yes, you may have been indiscriminate in the past but don’t view genital herpes as a punishment from God. He of all beings would never wish for you to suffer. And if you haven’t been indiscriminate but got infected by accident or deception, don’t blame God likewise for your condition. Accept it as a part of life and move on. Genital herpes does not mean that it’s the end of the world if you don’t want it to. Although there’s still no cure developed for genital herpes, medication that suppress and provide relief from painful symptoms can reduce its negative impact.

DON’T…

Use antibacterial cream or ointment without consulting a doctor first.

The blisters, lesions or sores that usually appear in the first breakout of genital herpes are not ordinary ones which can be cured by applying any antibacterial cream. These usually take one to two weeks to heal completely but during those fourteen days, you will be experiencing severe pain. Do not risk letting the condition exacerbate further if you want to avoid additional pain.

Break the blisters open.

These blisters or lesions are quite painful when coming into contact with anything and it will not improve matters if you think tearing them off your skin is a quick solution to your problems.

DO…

Bathe in warm water regularly.

Warm baths can ease the pain that genital herpes symptoms bring. You can cleanse these lesions gently with warm soap and water and if there’s bacterial infection, you can use a topical lotion – but only with your doctor’s permission. You may also add Epsom salt solutions to your bath if you prefer.

Wear loose fitting clothes and cotton underwear.

Naturally, tight fitting clothes would only serve to magnify the pain of genital herpes symptoms. Use loose fitting ones, cotton preferably or any no-fuss fabric like wool, to prevent further irritation and help dry out the infection faster. Cotton underwear is also a very good idea because it absorbs moisture from affected areas.

Ask the doctor to help you.

Whatever other problems you’re facing in connection with genital herpes, don’t be shy to ask help from your physician. Remember, they’re there to support you and anything you tell them will remain strictly confidential.
